For many, the day doesn’t truly begin until that first sip of coffee. It’s a ritual that dates back over 1,200 years to the highlands of Ethiopia and has since become a pillar of the modern morning routine. But while coffee culture was spreading across Africa and Arabia, a more vibrant, mindful caffeinated tradition was mastering a different approach to sustainable energy in the East. It offered what we now understand as a more balanced form of energy in the ongoing matcha vs coffee conversation.

Matcha traces its roots to the 7th-century Chinese Tang Dynasty, before finding its cultural home in the shaded fields of Japan’s Uji region. There, Zen Buddhist monks observed that this verdant green powder provided them with a calm yet alert presence during long hours of meditation. 

While both matcha and coffee evolved into their own global rituals, they represent two fundamentally different approaches to energy. Caffeine is the most widely used nervous system stimulant in the world. The human body is able to absorb 99% of caffeine within 45 minutes of ingestion. Once absorbed, it spikes cortisol levels and begins to influence the central nervous system by increasing one's heart rate and overall mental and physical responsiveness. One of its primary mechanisms is to block the effects of adenosine, a neurotransmitter that makes one feel tired. At the same time, it increases dopamine and norepinephrine levels, which are associated with focus and motivation. 

Caffeine has a half-life of approximately three to six hours, depending on individual factors such as genetics and metabolism, regardless of whether it is consumed in matcha or coffee form. This means that even four hours after your morning brew, your body has only metabolised around half of the caffeine you ingested. The difference between matcha and coffee lies in the caffeine content. A 240ml cup of brewed coffee typically contains between 70 mg and 140 mg of caffeine, while a single serving of matcha contains approximately 63 mg of caffeine. Of course, this can vary depending on the quality of matcha you consume, which is why choosing ceremonial-grade matcha is essential for a more balanced experience.

Regular coffee drinkers can develop a tolerance to the stimulant, meaning progressively higher amounts are needed to achieve the same level of alertness, day to day. This can eventually lead to overconsumption, where side effects such as fatigue, headaches, anxiety, and jitters come into play.

With an impressive antioxidant content per gram, matcha is one of the best sources of catechins, most notably, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). Research suggests that potent antioxidants, like EGCG, may help support and regulate metabolic function, weight management, cardiovascular health, and cognitive health, all of which play vital roles in how efficiently the body produces and uses energy. 

Antioxidants may not directly generate energy in the same way caffeine does, but they do support other bodily functions and physiological systems that help distribute energy more efficiently. 

With this, matcha offers a double benefit for the body. It creates immediate and sustained energy through the unique, complementary interaction between caffeine and L-theanine, while also supporting long-term health and well-being through its antioxidant-rich catechins.
